1/4 Scale PA-18 Super Cub ARF by Hangar 9 (HAN4540)


This great almost ready to fly large-scale Piper PA-18 Super Cub has an enormous one hundred and six -inch wingspan (269cm) and a host of scale features and details that enhance the overall scale look of the model.

A great deal of attention to scale fidelity and scale features ensures that the Cub not only looks great, it flies great as well! Its lightweight rugged airframe is constructed entirely from top quality balsa and laser-cut plywood parts resulting in an accurate rugged airframe that is then finished in a typical PA-18 scale colour scheme using Ultracote.

The scale look is further enhanced by the addition of a pre-painted fiberglass cowl with moulded panel lines, fully functioning landing gear with bungee suspension, scale Piper Cub "balloon" wheels and quick fit airfoil shaped folding aluminum wing struts for ease of assembly and transport.
Of particular note is the attention to detail that replicates the tubular construction of the full-size at the top/rear of the fuselage and also the scale fin to fuselage fillet detail; t hese are areas that often look wrong on many large Cub models.

Thanks to its generous wingspan and light wing loading the model has superb slow speed flight characteristics and is capable of taking off and landing at realistic scale speeds with the fully functional landing gear soaking up any bumps.
The Super Cub is a delight to assemble and an absolute joy to fly, can perform amazingly slow fly-bys or touch and goes and it can also perform simple scale aerobatic manoeuvres such as loops, stall turns and slow barrel rolls with ease.

Additionally if the model is fitted with a suitable tow/release mechanism it makes an ideal tow plane for a spot of glider towing.

The Cub may be powered with either a conventional two or four stroke glow engine, a petrol engine or an electric motor, whatever power source you choose the flight performance remains largely the same: excellent!

A comprehensive hardware pack, crystal clear windows and fully illustrated assembly guide make getting this Cub into the air easy, and the two-piece wing with easy-fit fold flat wing struts and bolt on two-piece tail make transporting this large model to the flying field even easier.

 PA-18 Super Cub

Following on from the hugely successful J3 Piper Cub the equally successful PA-18 Super Cub first entered production in 1949 with the first prototype and production version powered by a 95 hp Continental C-90-8F piston engine.

In total Piper Aircraft built 10,326 Super Cubs between 1949 and 1994. Just 44 were built at Vero Beach, Florida - all the rest at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The biggest year for Super Cub production was 1953, when 1043 were built.

Like the J-3s and PA-11s before them, most Super Cubs were initially used as working airplanes. They served as trainers, dusters and sprayers, banner towers, pipeline and power-line patrollers, border patrollers, military liaison aircraft, bush planes and in any other way pilots could use and abuse them.

Few aircraft have ever been subjected to more aftermarket modifications than the Super Cub - in fact in their efforts to squeeze out more performance, Alaskan bush pilots have sometimes rendered them virtually unidentifiable as PA-18s.

The Super Cub, however, did not die when Piper Aircraft ceased production in 1994. A host of small companies simply tooled up and began building their own versions of the airplane - in kit form to avoid the cost of F.A.A certification. There are even turboprop versions flying today!

Today all the various models of original Piper Super Cubs are highly prized and sought after by pilots, evidenced by the relatively high prices being asked for them!
